QOH worked closely with the client and consultants on the design of a refurbishment of a series of Science Teaching Laboratory spaces at the Callaghan Campus of the University of Newcastle. These spaces included an Environmental Science Lab, Chemistry Lab, associated preparatory rooms, Instrument room and foyer space.
This internal refurbishment project (approximately 680 square metres in total) was extremely complex in its design and detailing, with the main issues revolving around the extensive regulations and standards to be adhered to within the design, the management of new and existing services, and the materiality and finishes required for the laboratories.
The project included the reconfiguration of the internal layout to increase functionality of the teaching spaces and required extensive consultation with the client and multiple lab user groups, enabling the spaces to be tailored to the exacting specification and requirements for each laboratory type.
