The Stage 3 development at St Patrick’s Primary School has been carefully conceived to accommodate the school’s sustained enrolment growth since its establishment in 2017. As part of the school’s long-term strategic master plan, the new building not only meets current demand but is designed to be adaptable for future educational needs. It strengthens campus connectivity by responding directly to the existing play space precinct and contributes to a more cohesive and integrated learning environment.
This three-storey building extends the existing Stage 1 footprint, continuing the architectural rhythm and language established in the original development. Its placement and massing have been shaped by the site’s steep topography, stepping up from the lower Herbert Street frontage to the upper Adams Lane level. A key objective of the design was to maximise the building footprint and internal learning areas while continuing the linear play space along Adams Lane, preserving valuable outdoor areas and promoting active engagement throughout the site.
Internally, the building has been arranged to support a broad range of learning experiences. The lower level accommodates a dedicated resource centre, a music room equipped with practice spaces, and student amenities, forming a cultural and creative hub within the school. At ground level, a large slab over creates a versatile undercover space equipped with a sports court and multiple play areas that ensure all-weather usability. The upper level comprises four new general learning areas, a central learning common, and a verandah, all directly linked to the existing Stage 1 first-floor circulation, ensuring fluid movement and connection across the site.
The design concept draws inspiration from a “hive”—a structured yet dynamic environment representing the diversity of learning taking place within. This idea is expressed through the distinctive geometric hexagonal façade, which reflects the vibrant activity of students engaged in both focused academic tasks and more expressive pursuits such as music, sport, and performance. The façade itself performs a dual function: acting as an architectural statement while also serving as a modular secondary skin that reduces solar heat gain.
Overall, the Stage 3 project delivers a vibrant and functional addition to St Patrick’s Primary School, expanding its capacity and enhancing its facilities while maintaining a strong commitment to design quality, sustainability, and educational excellence.
