St Mary’s Catholic College, Gateshead – Stage 3

Following unprecedented growth at the school after completion of Stages 1 and 2, this stage of works was developed as part of a revised masterplan for St Mary’s Catholic College, Gateshead.

Responding to revised NCC and mine subsidence conditions across the site, Stage 3 presented an opportunity to rationalise the site planning, co-locating all of the sites TAS functions into a single hub, and extending the sites landscaped quadrangle to provide a significantly improved connection to the active outdoor space. This was facilitated with the development of the new Block E building which book ends the landscape zone, providing a strong visual link between key site elements, and addresses the currently lacking equitable access provisions across the site.

The new Block E building provides a new primary learning hub for the site, with a Resource Centre and Senior Study, Student and Staff Amenities, Fitness Hub and connected COLA, which will function as an interim Presentation Space and Hall during the completion of future stages, and as an overflow space for school functions at completion of the Masterplan. Interconnected flexible learning spaces and learning commons are supported by a series of varied seminar spaces and learning nooks which complete the amenity of this stage, catering for the growing population while providing a contemporary learning environment for the school community.
