Sacred Heart Primary School, Cabramatta

School Refurbishment

Winner of the 2019 Learning Environments (Australasia) NSW Chapter Award for Renovation/ Modernisation under $5 Million.

Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, Cabramatta is a 2-stream school which required a masterplan to consolidate, repurpose and re-organise both parish and school buildings, simplifying use across the site.

The master planning stage addressed the planning issues cause by parish used shared facilities spread throughout the site. QOH re-arranged these facilities ensuring that all parish facilities are together, and all the school facilities are together. This involved repurposing Block A and the existing parish hall into three new GLA spaces and an art room while GLA space closer to the parish facilities was given from the school to the parish.

The architectural solution: amalgamating three existing blocks unifying 18 GLA spaces under one roof and transforming an existing external space, cluttered with disjointed walkways, into a learning common containing a Tiered Presentation Area and Practical Activity Areas which connect and flow into adjacent classrooms while significantly improving accessibility for the site.

The new ‘Learning Street’ provides the school with additional usable floor space within the existing footprint of three existing buildings. By utilising these existing buildings, QOH were able to deliver a cost-effective solution which provides learning spaces which give the impression of a new building at the fraction of the cost. Through careful programming QOH provided a staged construction solution to minimise the impact on the school during construction.

QOH has a functional programme focused on quality spaces, that re-images the potential of existing structures with minimal impact on the school during construction.
