The Mark Street project consisted of the demolition and rebuilding of an existing heritage cottage and construction of a 2-story addition to the rear of the cottage, creating a modern 4-bedroom house.
The Development Application required the cottage to be maintained and refurbished, however, the cottage was so degraded that the existing structure could not be saved and was fully rebuilt to match the existing heritage cottage and all its features.
The existing sandstone chimneys within the cottage never had a structural footing and were leaning heavily, these were demolished block by block and then rebuilt, with the stone mason required to carefully number each block and create a plan showing the layout to enable the chimneys to be rebuilt as accurately as possible.
The new rear extension building is set back behind the cottage to prevent it from visually overpowering the cottage, the external colour and materials selection also assists with this, clearly delineating the line between old and new, and the dark cladding designed to enable the extension to recede into the background.
